This presentation focuses on the amazing wanderers and migrants that can be found in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument is the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area under the U.S. flag, and one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world. It encompasses 582,578 square miles of the Pacific Ocean (1,508,870 square kilometers) - an area larger than all the country's national parks combined. ‘Akiapōlā‘au (‘Aki's) are endemic and endangered honeycreepers found in koa forests on Hawaii Island. One population of ‘Akis in Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve is being monitored closely by a conservation bird team. The team hopes to discover and document homeranges, breeding season, and particular behaviors unique to these special birds.
