Coexistence

‘Io Around Us

For all you Hawai‘i Island residents as well as Hawai‘i Island visitors (past, current, and future)… here’s a quick recap why it’s so awesome to have ‘Io in our backyards!

Using Wildlife-safe Rodent Control

‘Io are very opportunistic hunters and feeders. If they can get away with eating someone else’s catch, they will! They will also go after poisoned rodents because poisoned rodents are slow and easy to catch. Switching to raptor-friendly rodent control will allow you to continue to control rodent populations without harming ‘Io populations.

Protect Your Small Animals

There are ways to protect your small animals from ‘Io that does not require shooting them. As opportunistic hunters, if ‘Io have to work too hard to catch an animal they will typically move on.
