Bird Watcher’s Digest was launched in 1978 from the Thompson Family living room in Marietta, Ohio. The Thompsons knew very little about the publishing business back then, but they did have a passion for watching birds and a commitment to serving our customers. Over the years we’ve learned a great deal about our fellow bird watchers and our goal of providing them with the world’s greatest bird magazine has never changed.
When Bill Thompson III succumbed to pancreatic cancer in March 2019, he handed over the reins to his partner in business and life, Wendy Clark. Wendy is a career communication specialist and worked alongside Bill and the BWD team for over a decade. Wendy is now the Publisher and President of Bird Watcher’s Digest, Watching Backyard Birds, Redstart Birding, and Reader Rendezvous Birding Tours. Wendy and her dream-team of 11 colleagues are proud to comprise the only female-owned optics retail company + publishing company in the world, and they work hard every day to support their subscribers, clients, partners, and global conservation efforts. They each have a passion for birding and are humbled to carry on the Thompson family legacy for years to come.
Redstart Birding is a birding optics and gear retail company founded by Bill Thompson in 2018 and is now in its third successful year!
