SUMMARY:Tracking the Endangered ‘Akiapōlā‘au
DESCRIPTION:‘Akiapōlā‘au (‘Aki’s) are endemic and endangered honeycreepers found in koa forests on Hawaii Island. One population of ‘Akis in Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve is being monitored closely by a conservation bird team.  The team hopes to discover and document homeranges\, breeding season\, and particular behaviors unique to these special birds. Watch to find out more about the ‘Akiapōlā‘au and how tracking is conducted using radio telemetry. \n\nAbout the Presenters\n\nAlex Wang\nAlex Wang is the Ornithological Specialist working with the Natural Area Reserves System\, a program of the Div of Forestry and Wildlife\, based out of Hilo\, HI. He has a strong love of birds from all over the world\, and makes time for birding wherever he goes. Alex is from Tacoma\, WA\, has called Hawaii home for many years. He enjoys ultimate frisbee and walking his dog. \n\nBret Mossman\nBret Mossman is the Forest Bird Specialist working with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit and the Natural Area Reserves System out of the Div of Forestry and Wildlife in Hilo\, HI. He treasures the diversity among native Hawaiian birds and has dedicated himself to documenting their beauty and behaviors. Bret is from Utah with family history on Hawaii Island. He enjoys gardening and raising turkeys in his spare time. \n\n\nJess Loeffler\nJess Loeffler is the Kupu Service Member for the Natural Area Reserves System based in Hilo\, HI. She has a great love for animals and the environment\, and has particular interest in the study of avian populations and distributions. She is from Grand Forks\, ND and has worked with native Hawaiian forest birds including nene for 2 years. She is beginning graduate studies this fall at North Dakota State University and is looking forward to reuniting with old friends from home.
