Festival of Birds

Leeward Birding and Windward Seawatch with Visit to Hawai`i Wildlife Center

Friday, September 15th, 2017

10 hours
Departs Sheraton Kona at 6:00am.

Spend the day along the Kona Kohala Coast for a relaxed adventure of coastal and field birding that ends with a late afternoon sunset seawatch for island pelagics. We’ll also visit our festival partner and beneficiary, theĀ Hawai`i Wildlife Center, to see the new science and discovery center and view wildlife hospital patients on camera. As we venture up the coast you’ll experience the dramatic contrast of our island’s dry leeward country and the lush wet windward side. This is a trip that will target some of our most unusual migrants and hard to find birds like the Bristle-thighed Curlew and Chestnut Bellied Sandgrouse.

Note: Participants must be able to hike up to 2.5 miles over uneven or rocky terrain, we may encounter cool, wet or muddy conditions.
