Mauna Kea Reforestation Service Day

Meet at Kilohoana hunter checking station at 8:30 AM.

Volunteer along the Hawaiʻi Island Birding Trail with Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project. The day includes out planting work with Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project and a walk through the Palila Discovery Trail at Kaohe Reserve. Volunteers please pack a lunch and bottled water. Hawaiʻi Forest and Trails will provide water refills. Please visit the MKFRP website for important info regarding precautions to take for working in a remote area at high altitude with potentially rapidly changing weather conditions.

Note: Participants must sign a volunteer form and be able to hike over uneven or rocky terrain. All volunteers must have sturdy hiking boots that come above the ankle. Other helpful items to bring include:

  • Long pants
  • T-shirts or long sleeved shirts for field work
  • Medications
  • Rain jacket and rain pants
  • Work gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Water bottle
  • Lunch
  • Positive attitude

We may encounter cool, wet or muddy conditions.
